A victim of cybercrime has complained to the police that an employee of the Gujarat state cyber crime cell itself has demanded a bribe from him.
The complainant Ashish Tomar’s bank account was frozen, so he dialled the toll-free number 1930 to seek a solution. He talked to Yash Rana on the helpline, a technical expert outsourced by the police to work at the cyber Cell. 1930 is the number most publicised by the government, asking the public to reach out in case of cyber fraud.
Ashish Tomar has produced two audio clips where the accused, Yash Rana, a resident of Sargasan in Gandhinagar, is heard asking for a bribe of Rs. 70,000 to unfreeze the account. The police have registered a case and initiated the process to arrest the accused.
The incident showcases the deep-rooted corruption in every sphere of society. The police, seeking a bribe from someone calling a helpline is a new low. The incident showcases the limited accountability and diluted process of hiring by outsourcing. It also shows the small tip of a huge iceberg as to how innocent citizens could be fleeced by indiscriminately freezing and later unfreezing the account after accepting bribes.
