The administrators of Narendra Modi Medical College, situated in Maninagar, Ahmedabad, have come down heavily on the students implicated in the ragging. The authorities said they stand for zero tolerance, concerning breaches of anti-ragging policy.
The college, run by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Medical Education Trust, has suspended four senior students, including two girls. The suspended students, pursuing the Master of Surgery programme, are accused of engaging in banned ragging activities.
The dean of the college, Dr. Dipti Shah, said that Dr. Vraj Vaghani and Dr. Shivani Patel, two senior students, are suspended for two years and one year, respectively, whereas Dr. Karan Parejiya and Dr. Aneri Nayak are suspended for 25 days. The suspension came after an inquiry into the complaint made by four first-year students and their parents.
The junior students complained about the intolerable harassment inflicted upon them by the seniors. The juniors were made to write prescriptions up to 500 times. They were also humiliated constantly by verbal abuse. The seniors prevented the juniors from taking baths for a week in the name of ragging. They were also harassed during their meals, all in the name of playful ragging which went a little too far.
As per the junior students and their parents, they approached the head of the surgery department, Dr. Asit Patel but he did not take the allegations seriously. The parents also sent an e-mail to the HOD and informed about the trauma their children were undergoing. The juniors then approached the dean Dr. Dipti Shah.
The punishment was given to the students after hearing them out in a meeting of the college council. The authorities took the decision unanimously after a detailed inquiry where the victims produced WhatsApp records and other proof.
