A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Gujarat High Court over the alleged embezzlement of 130 kg of gold and crores of rupees from the Shri Ghantakarna Mahaveer Mandir, a pilgrimage site in Mahudi, Gandhinagar.
The petition, filed by Jayesh Mehta, has sought an audit of the accounts and the formation of a committee by the state government to probe the alleged fraud that took place in 2012-14.
The petition said 130 kg gold from the temple had gone missing and over Rs 14 crore was embezzled by the present committee members, Bhupendrabhai Vora and Kamleshbhai Mehta.
The petition has said the present committee of the temple was illegally constituted. It also accused the committee members of malpractice during demonetisation in 2016. It is alleged that the members exchanged old notes for a 20% commission.
The petition is likely to come up for hearing after the summer break in the high court. Over a century old, the Jain temple has considerable religious and cultural significance.
