The Gujarat Media Club (GMC), a leading organisation representing the media community in Gujarat, announced on Wednesday the establishment of a Welfare Fund. The fund is designed to provide support to its members and the broader fraternity during times of medical and life-threatening distress.
In a statement released on Wednesday, GMC President Nirnay Kapoor approved a proposal for creation of ‘Welfare Fund’, which has been allocated an initial sum of Rs. 1,00,00,000 (Rupees One Crore). The fund is intended to support welfare initiatives for journalist members of the club and the wider professional fraternity. The decision to establish the Welfare Fund was unanimously agreed upon by the board following thorough deliberations.
The newly launched Welfare Fund has already begun to make a difference. Financial assistance has been approved and provided to the families of two deceased journalists. The Club has handed over cheques of Rs One lakh each to the families of the late Shri Anand Pattani, a Surat-based TV journalist and Nitin Gaikwad, a News Cameraman working with an Ahmedabad based news portal.
The ‘Welfare Fund’, amounting to Rs. 1,00,00,000 (Rupees One Crore), aims to provide health and death benefits to the members of the club or their family in the unfortunate event of a member’s demise. The next of kin of club members will receive financial assistance through group insurance/health policy, while non-club members will receive Rs 1 lakh in cases of sudden or accidental death, with a maximum age limit of 50 years for accidental deaths.
The fund will also cover non-Club members working as journalists with any recognised Print, TV and Digital (online) media within the State of Gujarat, as well as media entrepreneurs who have a registered media organisation/entity in Gujarat.
The establishment of the Welfare Fund underscores the club’s commitment to its members’ well-being, offering financial assistance during unexpected challenges such as medical emergencies or accidents. It will also play a crucial role in crisis management, responding promptly to emergencies and fostering a sense of community, collaboration and mutual support among its members and the wider fraternity of journalists.
