Alex Rodriguez, former American baseball player, businessman and philanthropist, has shared how cutting down on meat has led him to lose 32 pounds (14.5 kgs) in a year.
Rodriguez, 48, nicknamed “A-Rod” said that the biggest change he has made in his diet is reducing meat intake. He would consume meat eight out of 10 days and has now cut down to one or two days out of 10.
Rodriguez has played for the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, and New York Yankees. The former sports star said he goes to the gym six or seven days a week. His workout routine includes yoga, meditation, and a 40-minute walk before bed.
Three major changes
Rodriguez said he was helped by his girlfriend, fitness instructor Jaclyn Cordeiro in his weight loss journey. He has posted on social media that three major changes were responsible for his weight loss.
One, consuming more plants, less red meat. Two, practising intermittent fasting. Three, going for night walks. Small changes led to big results and he is feeling very good these days, he has said.
Rodriguez retired in August 2016. In 2023, he shared with the media that he used to eat steak, potatoes, rice, and beans across six or seven meals a day when he was in season.
Risks of eating red meat
Research has shown that people who eat less meat have a lower risk of heart disease and cancer. People who live in Blue Zones, where people live longer and healthier lives, reportedly eat very little red meat and processed foods.
When consuming red meat, the American Heart Association recommends eating lean cuts of meat and limiting portion sizes.
