Auto drivers performing dangerous stunts on roads, risking their own lives, that of passengers and others, has seen a rise this year. Nine auto drivers have been booked for this offence in just three months of the year. In 2023, 12 auto drivers were held for stunts.
This sharp rise is a matter of concern. In 2023, 85 road accidents were registered involving autos, with 45 people losing their lives. Four people have lost their lives in 12 accidents that involved autos between January-March this year.
A few auto drivers are putting the entire auto driver community in disrepute. Recently, 22-year-old auto driver, Jagdish Thakor, a resident of Daskroi, was nabbed in Ahmedabad after his video showing him sitting on top of the auto near Panchratna Arcade in Pirana went viral. Police sources said they have deployed a team to monitor social media.
The traffic department has written to the Regional Transport Office to confiscate Thakor’s driving licence and cancel it. Police sources appeal to the people to inform the police if they come across such dangerous stunts being carried out.
