The Sabarmati Ashram, once the residence of Mahatma Gandhi, is poised for a significant transformation with a redevelopment project worth Rs 1,200 crore. The blueprint for the Gandhi Ashram Memorial & Precinct Development project is set to be revealed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 12, marking the commencement of this ambitious initiative.
The event, awaiting its official announcement, will be held near Hriday Kunj at the open ground next to Abhay Ghat. The project, a joint venture between the state and central governments, spans 55 acres and is expected to reach completion in two years.
Under the guidance of the Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust (SAPMT), the project has been shaped through comprehensive discussions with Gandhian institutions and stakeholders. The objective is to refurbish the Ashram, preserving structures from Gandhi’s time that embody his life, teachings, and philosophies.
The existing 5-acre memorial will expand to 55 acres within a larger 322-acre area. The project will protect 21 existing structures, including Magan Nivas, Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, and Ashram Shala. Furthermore, 13 buildings are earmarked for restoration, with three specific structures – Delha Puni Kendra, Saat Ordiyon, and Anand Bhagwan Sangrahalya – set for reconstruction using traditional architectural methods. The worn-out Gaushala buildings will be replaced with new ones.
In line with Gandhi’s architectural preferences, the redevelopment will use lime and bricks instead of cement or steel, and every effort will be made to conserve all trees and augment the greenery.
The rejuvenated Ashram will feature an orientation and interpretation center, a souvenir shop, and spaces for interactive workshops on topics ranging from paper-making to Gandhian history.
The planned exhibitions will showcase various facets of Gandhi’s life, his works in India and overseas, his movements and yatras, daily routines, and significant events. The narrative of the Ashram will be presented, spotlighting key associates and visitors prior to 1930, main Ashramites from 1917 to 1951, a gallery of female leaders, and details about Charkha and Khadi production.
As part of this initiative, over 250 families, mainly descendants of those brought to the Ashram by Mahatma Gandhi in 1917, have been relocated.
