The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Friday that several Indian citizens were tricked into working for the Russian army. The MEA has taken strong action with the Russian government to secure the early release of these individuals.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, during a press briefing, announced strict measures against agents and others who recruited these Indians with false promises. “The CBI successfully dismantled a major human trafficking network yesterday through raids in multiple cities and the collection of evidence. A case of human trafficking has been filed against several agents,” Jaiswal stated.
He urged Indian citizens to be cautious of job offers from agents promising support roles in the Russian army. “Such opportunities are dangerous and can put lives at risk,” he emphasized. “We are dedicated to securing the early release of our citizens currently serving as support staff for the Russian army and their eventual return home.”
Jaiswal’s comments follow raids conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday across seven Indian cities. The CBI discovered that multiple agents, including three based in Russia, allegedly deceived Indian students by offering admission to questionable private universities in Russia. These offers included enticements such as free or discounted visa extensions and reduced tuition fees.
However, upon reaching Russia, the agents confiscated the passports of these Indians and reportedly forced them to fight in the Ukraine war against their will, according to the CBI’s investigation.
CBI teams conducted searches in Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai, Ambala, Chandigarh, Madurai, and Chennai. The raids yielded Rs 50 lakh in cash, along with incriminating documents and electronic devices like laptops, phones, desktops, and CCTV footage.
