A Tata Memorial Hospital doctor has warned the public from trusting social media influencers when it comes to health matters. Urging people to visit a doctor instead, Dr Pramesh has tweeted that random suggestions made by influencers are harmful to health.
“Please don’t follow random ‘influencers’ who don’t have true science to back them beyond ‘Trust me, bro’,” he tweets in a social media post that was made in response to Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath’s post on Twitter where he had updated his fans and followers about his health condition.
Kamath suffered a stroke a few weeks ago which he attributed to poor sleep, exhaustion and dehydration. In a long post on social media, Nithin recently shared about his health condition along with two pictures, one of which is when he was treated for the stroke.
The post went viral and several claims and suggestions were made. The suggestions included getting hyperbaric oxygen therapy for an hour a day, buying a red infrared therapy device and getting omega capsules.
“Zero true science to back this. Don’t fall for influencers without science background,” Dr. Pramesh warned.
Dr Deepak Krishnamurthy, senior interventional cardiologist tweeted that there is need for work life balance. “There needs to be time to relax, unwind and sleep. For all that you need spare time,” he wrote.
A stroke, often termed a “brain attack,” occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is disrupted, either due to a blockage (ischemic stroke) or bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke). The sudden symptoms that are warning signs of a stroke are weakness or paralysis on one side of the body, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, and vision problems.
Prompt medical attention, rehabilitation, and lifestyle changes are crucial in stroke management.
