| Updated: February 25, 2024 17:00

Ahmedabad, the largest city in the state of Gujarat, is a city that whispers history from its ancient forts and vibrates with a million stories. Located on the banks of the River Sabarmati, Ahmedabad has served as a political and economic capital since its establishment.

Early History

The earliest settlement in Ahmedabad can be traced back to the 12th century under the rule of the Chaulukya dynasty. Sultan Ahmad Shah founded the city in 1411 AD on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati River. The city continued to flourish as the capital of the State of Gujarat for six centuries.

Under the rule of the Sultanate from 1411 to 1572, Ahmedabad prospered. The city expanded in every direction with the addition of new localities and suburbs on both sides of the river. The city was beautified with palaces, mansions, mausoleums, and mosques erected by the noblemen of the sultans and wealthy merchants of the capital.

The Mughal Era

The city renewed its greatness under the early rulers of the Mughal Empire for the next 135 years, from 1572 to 1707. However, the city suffered due to political instability under the late Mughal rulers, followed by joint rule between the Maratha and the Mughals.

From 1737 to 1753, there was a joint rule of the Mughal Viceroy and the Peshwa over Ahmedabad. In 1753, the combined armies of Raghunath Rao and Damaji Gaekwad overtook the citadel and ended Mughal rule in Ahmedabad.

The British Era

The city again progressed when it gained political freedom by the establishment of a municipality and the opening of a railway under British crown rule from 1857 to 1947. During this period, Ahmedabad became a thriving centre of trade in the country and the chief city of Gujarat.

Post-Independence

Following the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi in 1915, the city became the centre stage of the Indian independence movement. After independence, Ahmedabad was a part of Bombay State. When Gujarat was carved out in 1960, it again became the capital of the state until the establishment of Gandhinagar in 1965.

Today, Ahmedabad is not only the cultural and economic centre of Gujarat but also the seventh-largest city of India. The city is a blend of history, culture, and a never-ending spirit. As we delve into the history of Ahmedabad, we embrace its diversity, celebrate its rich heritage, and are inspired by its resilience. The city continues to shine, weave new stories, and bring smiles to everyone who visits its vibrant streets.
