A report presented to the Gujarat State Assembly has recommended the establishment of a dam safety unit and the creation of an emergency plan. The report, citing data from the Gujarat State Dam Safety Organisation (GSDSO), provides an in-depth analysis of the state’s dams.
During the 2022-23 period, the GSDSO examined 53 dams across Gujarat. The report states that none of these dams required any major repair work or presented any significant issues. Furthermore, no accidents were reported at these dams during this period.
Following the implementation of the Dam Safety Act of 2021, Gujarat established the GSDSO to conduct thorough examinations and analyses of dam conditions. In response to orders from the central government, the GSDSO scrutinised the current condition of Gujarat’s 530 dams.
The majority of these dams require only minimal work, mostly formalities. All of these dams, built before the implementation of the act, are categorised as specified dams. They fall under category-III, requiring minor remedial measures that can be rectified within the year.
The report also emphasises the need for an emergency action plan, in line with the Central Water Commission’s (CWC) guidelines.
Interestingly, 30 of these dams, including Adhia, Savli, Limla, Dhanora, and Fakirwadi, among others, are over a century old. The water reserve capacity of these dams is tested during the monsoon season, ensuring their continued functionality and safety.
