Jobanjitsingh Sandhu, the accused arrested in the Rs 21,000 crore drug scandal in Mundra, in Gujarat, has escaped from police custody. Bhuj police was returning after presenting Sandhu in Amritsar court, when the accused escaped.
Sandhu was caught in Mundra in 2021 and was lodged in Kutch’s Palara Khas Jail. As his case was pending in Amritsar, he was taken to Amritsar from Palara Jail in Bhuj by three Gujarat police personnel. He was produced in the Amritsar Sessions Court.
After the court hearing, the police team along with the prisoner left for Palara Jail. While the prisoner was being brought back to Bhuj, everyone stopped for lunch at a highway dhaba a little ahead of Amritsar around 12:30 PM. At that time, Jobanjitsingh went to the toilet. But going to the toilet was an excuse. He escaped from there long before the police could sense something was wrong. The cops combed the surrounding farm and areas nearby, but there was no trace of him.
Police sources said the local police believe the accused was hiding somewhere in Amritsar itself.
DSP Bhuj Police Headquarters AR Jhankat said that Gujarat Police and Punjab Police were jointly searching the accused.
