An Indian American family of four from Kerala, India, was found dead in their San Mateo, California home on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. The deceased have been identified as Anand Sujith Henry (42), his wife Alice Priyanka (40), and their twin children, Noah and Neithan (4).
San Mateo police reported that two of the victims succumbed to gunshot wounds, while the cause of death for the remaining two is yet to be determined. The case is currently being investigated as a potential murder-suicide, but other possibilities have not been ruled out.
Family members initially suspected carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty air conditioner or heater, citing previous complaints of headaches and nausea from the family. However, police found no evidence of gas leakage or malfunctioning appliances in the house.
Anand and Alice, both IT professionals, had been residing in the US for the past nine years. Anand, a software engineer, and Alice, a senior analyst, moved to San Mateo County from New Jersey two years ago. The couple was well-regarded by their neighbors and colleagues, who described them as friendly, hardworking, and devoted parents.
The Indian Consulate in San Francisco has reached out to the family members in India and is providing consular assistance. The consulate has also expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and the Indian American community.
As the motive behind the deaths remains unclear, the police are awaiting the results of the autopsy and forensic analysis. They have appealed to the public for any information that could assist in solving the case.
This incident adds to a series of unfortunate events involving Indian students in the US. Last week, Sameer Kamath, a Purdue University student, was found dead in Warren County. In a separate incident last month, another Purdue student, Neel Acharya, was found dead on campus after being missing for several days. Acharya was pursuing a dual degree in computer science and data science and was a part of the prestigious John Martinson Honors College.
