In preparation for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha polls from West Bengal on February 27, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has unveiled its lineup of candidates, featuring notable figures including journalist Sagarika Ghose, party leader Sushmita Dev, and two others.
The announcement was made on Sunday, with the party expressing its pleasure in nominating Sagarika Ghose, Sushmita Dev, Md Nadimul Haque, and Mamata Bala Thakur for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The TMC’s official statement extended heartfelt wishes to the nominees, urging them to uphold the party’s legacy of advocating for the rights of every Indian.
Among the candidates, Md Nadimul Haque, a two-time Rajya Sabha MP, returns to the spotlight, while the decision not to renominate three sitting MPs signals a notable shift in the party’s strategy. Sagarika Ghose, a renowned journalist, is yet to formally join the TMC, adding intrigue to her nomination.
Former Congress leader Sushmita Dev, who joined the TMC in 2021, has been a Rajya Sabha MP since October 2021, taking over from TMC leader Manas Bhunia. Dev, also serving as TMC’s national spokesperson, oversees the party’s affairs in Assam.
However, the nomination that has drawn significant attention is that of former Lok Sabha MP and Matua leader Mamata Bala Thakur. Thakur’s entry into the fray comes amidst BJP’s efforts to court the Matua community, a crucial voting bloc in West Bengal politics.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, veteran journalist Nadimul Haque acknowledged the support of TMC leaders Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, thanking them for entrusting him with the responsibility to serve the masses for the third time.
