Ahmedabad, Gujarat: Mumbai-based cleric Mufti Salman Azhari landed in deeper trouble on Tuesday after Gujarat police registered a second FIR against him for allegedly delivering a hate speech at a religious event in Kutch district last week.
This comes just days after Azhari’s arrest in a separate hate speech case lodged in Junagadh. He was brought to Ahmedabad by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad and produced before a local court, which sent him and two others to one-day police remand.
The latest FIR was filed at Samakhiyali police station, where Azhari is accused of making inflammatory remarks during an event organized on January 31. The police had granted permission for the event, but they claim the content of Azhari’s speech violated the law.
“We learned that Azhari delivered a speech similar to the one in Junagadh at the Samakhiyali event,” said Kutch (East) SP Sagar Bagmar. “He was booked under sections 153B (promoting enmity) and 505(2) (public mischief) of the IPC.”
Azhari’s troubles began on Sunday when he was arrested in Mumbai for a hate speech allegedly delivered in Junagadh on January 31. He is currently in police custody and faces investigation in both cases.
