Surat: A police inspector in Surat has been suspended and faces a departmental probe after allegations surfaced that he arrested and tortured a businessman who had already secured anticipatory bail from the Supreme Court. The incident has sparked outrage, with the top court calling the businessman’s illegal custody “grossest contempt.”
The businessman, Tushar Shah, was arrested by Inspector R.Y. Raval of Vesu police station on December 13 despite being granted bail in a cheating case. Allegedly, Shah was tortured during his four-day remand period and pressured to settle a financial dispute.
The Supreme Court took note of this “illegal custody” earlier this month and expressed extreme displeasure. Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice Sandeep Mehta issued notices to police officials and the judicial magistrate involved in the case.
Responding to the court’s criticism, Surat Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Tomar initiated an internal inquiry against Raval. Based on the initial findings, Raval was suspended last week and transferred to police headquarters. A formal departmental inquiry is now underway.
The Supreme Court also expressed concern about the role of the judicial magistrate who approved Shah’s remand despite his bail order. The court has indicated that it will request the Gujarat High Court to provide proper training to magistrates to prevent such incidents from happening again.
