Ahmedabad, Gujarat – In a bold bid to become India’s Olympic capital, Ahmedabad has unveiled an ambitious Rs 6,000-crore plan for a state-of-the-art sports enclave in the city’s Motera locality. The project, spearheaded by a dedicated Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), aims to transform Ahmedabad into a world-class sporting hub and put India on the map as a potential host for the 2036 Summer Olympics.
A Masterplan for Olympic Glory
The proposed 300-acre Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, designed in collaboration with renowned Australian firm Populous, will be a jewel in Ahmedabad’s crown. Spanning a 2-km stretch along the scenic Sabarmati Riverfront, the enclave will boast six brand-new stadiums with a combined capacity exceeding 1 lakh, adding to the existing 1.10 lakh-seater Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium.
“The master plan is nearly ready,” M Thennarasan, Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner and CEO/MD of GOLYMPIC, the entity overseeing the project, told The Indian Express. “We have incorporated inputs from various stakeholders to ensure that the enclave meets the highest Olympic standards.”
Beyond the Games: A Legacy of Infrastructure
Ahmedabad’s Olympic aspirations extend beyond hosting a spectacular sporting event. The city is committed to developing long-lasting infrastructure that will benefit its citizens for years to come. The sports enclave, with its modern stadiums and facilities, will serve as a training ground for future generations of athletes and a vibrant sports hub for the community.
Unique “Ring of Unity” to Add Buzz
One of the most intriguing features of the master plan is the “Ring of Unity,” a 4-acre recreational and activity center designed to be a focal point for the enclave. This unique circular space, with a 150-meter diameter, will serve as a platform for cultural events, festivals, and commercial activities, accommodating up to 5,000 people comfortably, with the potential to expand to 12,000 with temporary structures. The Ring will feature an outdoor amphitheater, an open plaza, scenic walkways, and a waterfront deck, ensuring year-round enjoyment for residents and visitors alike.
Strategic Planning for a Seamless Olympic Experience
The master plan meticulously addresses all aspects of a successful Olympic Games. Over 20 Olympic sporting venues are strategically distributed across four precincts in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, ensuring efficient athlete and spectator movement. The proposed Olympic Village, located within a 30-minute radius of all venues, further emphasizes the focus on convenience and a smooth event experience.
Gujarat Government Explores Cost-Effective Solutions
Demonstrating fiscal responsibility, the Gujarat government is exploring cost-effective options for the International Broadcast Centre, a crucial component of any Olympic Games. By potentially utilizing existing venues in Gandhinagar, the government aims to strike a balance between Olympic aspirations and responsible resource management.
