RAJKOT, GUJARAT: The students of a primary school in Mul Dwarka Math village, Gujarat, took a stand against the alleged pollution caused by a nearby cement plant. Blocking the road leading to the facility for an hour, the children, along with villagers, sent a powerful message demanding a cleaner environment.
The village has been grappling with severe dust pollution due to the transportation of gypsum and coal for the cement plant, according to locals. Frustrated by inaction despite repeated complaints to the company, the villagers finally decided to involve their youngest residents in the fight for clean air.
“We are tired of living in a constant blanket of dust,” said Kishor Sikotariya, the village sarpanch. “Our children can’t even study in peace. We’ve pleaded with the company, sent videos to the authorities, but nothing has changed. This protest is our last resort.”
The children, their faces masked by the very dust they were protesting against, held placards and chanted slogans demanding cleaner air. A woman shared the toll the pollution had taken on their health, saying, “Our children are constantly sick with coughs and colds. This dust is making us all sick.”
The protest, though brief, resonated with local officials. N G Radadiya, the Kodinar mamlatdar, assured action, stating, “We’ve sent officials to investigate and forwarded the school and parents’ representations to the Gujarat Pollution Control Board.”
This act of youthful defiance by the children of Mul Dwarka Math village serves as a reminder that environmental concerns transcend age and apathy. Their voices, rising above the dust, echo a call for clean air and a future where development doesn’t come at the cost of children’s health.
