| Updated: January 24, 2024 20:01

Ahmedabad witnessed a series of suicide cases in the past few days, raising concerns over the mental health and well-being of the citizens. In the latest incident, a woman committed suicide by jumping from the 13th floor of a building in Vastrapur Government Colony on Wednesday evening. The woman, whose identity and motive are yet to be ascertained, came from outside and climbed to the 13th floor of the building. She then jumped from the balcony of a flat and died on the spot. The police reached the scene after getting the information and launched an investigation.

In another case, a youth named Sandip Parmar hanged himself at his home in Vejalpur on Tuesday, allegedly due to the harassment and torture by the Color Merchant Cooperative Bank. According to his brother Kuldeep Parmar, who filed a complaint against five people, Sandip had taken a loan of Rs 5 lakh from the bank and was unable to repay it due to the lockdown. He claimed that the bank officials and agents threatened and abused Sandip and demanded Rs 15 lakh as interest. Kuldeep said that Sandip was depressed and took the extreme step. The police have registered a case of abetment of suicide and cheating against the accused.

In a third incident, a middle-aged man named Kanu Parmar killed himself in Davda village of Nadiad taluka of Kheda district on Monday, reportedly due to the social ostracism by his community. Kanu left a suicide note, in which he blamed the president, vice-president, committee members and 14 others of his society for forcing him to die. He alleged that they had socially boycotted him and his family because of the inter-caste marriage of his son and daughter. The police seized his mobile phone and made a panchnama at the spot. They also registered a case of abetment of suicide against the 14 people named in the suicide note and took action.
