In the fiscal year 2022–23, only 10% of the total revenue collected from toll booths across the country came from 16 toll plazas. Out of these 16, four are located in Gujarat, contributing to a significant revenue of Rs 1235 crore in a year. In addition to this, three toll booths are in Rajasthan and two each are in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Uttar Pradesh tops the list with the highest revenue from highway tolls in a year, while Gujarat ranks fourth with Rs 4519 crore.
According to a report, among the 16 toll booths in the country that earn the most in a year, Vadodara’s L&T, Choryasi’s IRB, Vasad, and Kutch’s Samakhiyali are included. During the year 2022-23, only two percent of the total revenue of the country’s toll plazas came from Gujarat’s L&T toll plaza and Rajasthan’s Shahjahanpur. During this period, 40% of the total revenue came from 100 toll plazas on the national highway.
However, all highway earnings are not necessarily profitable. The government is increasing the number of toll booths, which also affects the revenue of other toll booths. The average revenue from toll booths was Rs 116 crore in 2015-16, which decreased to Rs 46 crore in 2021–22. After COVID, there has also been an increase in the number of toll plazas in the country. In 2014–15, there were 145; in 2019–20, there were 631; and in 2021–22, there were 959 toll booths across the country.
Revenue from road toll collection has tripled in the last seven years. In 2015-16, it was Rs 17759 crores; in 2016-17, it was Rs 18512 crores; in 2017-18, it was Rs 22665 crores; and in 2022–23, it increased to Rs 48028 crores. It is projected that by the year 2025, revenue will be collected from 27 thousand kilometres of highways.
