A 30-year-old woman with a learning disability was allegedly raped by her neighbour in the industrial Shapar-Veraval area of Ahmedabad on Monday. The woman’s sister lodged a complaint with the police against the accused Raju Vasuniya, who is a native of Madhya Pradesh.
According to the police, the accused noticed that the woman was alone in her hut around 11 am on Jan 18. He entered inside and raped her, threatening her not to tell anyone. The woman, who works as a domestic help, was unable to resist or raise an alarm due to her condition. The accused fled the spot after the crime.
The woman’s sister, who lives nearby, came to visit her in the evening and found her in a distressed state. She took her to a hospital, where the medical examination confirmed the sexual assault. She then approached the police and filed a case against Vasuniya, who was doing casual labour work in the area.
The police have registered a case under sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 3 and 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, as the victim has the mental age of a child. The police have launched a manhunt to nab the accused, who is absconding.
The incident has sparked outrage among the locals, who demanded strict action against the perpetrator and better security for the vulnerable sections of the society. The woman’s sister said that she wants justice for her sister and appealed to the authorities to ensure her safety and rehabilitation.
