Court orders compensation for 17 patients

The Gujarat High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the issue of cataract surgery at Ramanand Eye Hospital in Mandal, Viramgam. The court has issued notices to the health secretary and the superintendent of police of Ahmedabad Rural.

A bench of Justices AS Supehia and Vimal K Vyas took suo motu cognizance based on reports from news organizations. The court has ordered the government to submit a preliminary investigation report by February 7.

According to reports, 17 patients who underwent cataract surgery at the hospital between January 1 and 10 lost partial or complete vision in one or both eyes. The hospital is run by Shree Seva Niketan Trust.

The court has directed the government to ensure that the victims are provided with adequate compensation. The court has also ordered the government to take steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

The court’s intervention is welcome. It is important that the victims of this unfortunate incident are compensated and that steps are taken to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
