A 14-year-old girl, who was studying in a government residential school in Tumakuru district of Karnataka, gave birth to a baby boy at a hospital in Chikkaballapura district on January 9. The police registered a case of rape under the IPC and POCSO after the hospital authorities informed them. The girl was eight months pregnant when she came to her house and complained of stomach pain. Her parents took her to the hospital where the doctors found out that she was pregnant and performed the delivery. The girl and the baby are stable, but underweight.
The girl told the Child Welfare Committee that she was impregnated by a minor boy who was her school senior, but the boy denied it. The police said that the girl was not consistent with her statements and also named another boy as the possible father. The police are questioning both the boys and the girl’s parents, who are not cooperating. The Tumakuru district administration has suspended the hostel warden for negligence.
