Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a leading engineering and construction company in India, has been awarded a mega contract to build the electrification system for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) Project, also known as the bullet train project. The contract was given by a Japanese agency authorized by the National High Speed Rail Corporation, the implementing body of the project.
The MAHSR project is a joint venture between India and Japan, with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project aims to connect the two major cities of Mumbai and Ahmedabad with a high-speed rail network, covering a distance of 508 km. The electrification system, to be constructed by L&T, will allow the trains to run at a maximum speed of 320 km per hour, reducing the travel time between the two cities from about seven hours to less than three hours.
