To decongest upcoming traffic surge following the establishment of the Sabarmati bullet train depot, a bridge will be built parallel to the busy Chimanbhai Patel over bridge (OB) in Ahmedabad.
The government, in association with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), has decided to construct the new bridge from near the RTO Circle to the bullet train depot.
The bridge, which is on the route that connects the city to Gandhinagar, parts of north Gujarat and other states, has been witnessing heavy traffic.
Government sources said, “The urban development department and AMC have finalised a proposal to construct a new bridge parallel to the existing Chimanbhai Patel bridge. AMC will implement the project. The decision has been taken considering the heavy flow of traffic on the bridge at present and the fact that it is likely to increase even more after the bullet train project is commissioned.”
Commenting on the existing bridge, officials said, “Once the new bridge is constructed, it will be decided on how the existing bridge can be restructured to complement the flow of traffic.”
Sources said that Chimanbhai Patel Bridge has already been witnessing sizable traffic.
Heavy vehicles bound for north Gujarat and other states also use the bridge. “The existing bridge is already witnessing traffic to full capacity and with traffic flow likely to increase manifold after the bullet train becomes operational, there is a need to add another bridge parallel to the existing bridge,” sources said.
According to sources, a detailed project report for the new bridge will be sought, after which AMC will invite bids. “AMC is also expected to include the proposed project in its budget for 2024-25,” officials said.
