The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Gujarat has initiated legal proceedings against an inspector and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) for their alleged involvement in facilitating the illegal entry of substantial quantities of liquor into Gujarat. While a middleman has been apprehended in connection with the case, the police officers are currently absconding.
The ACB sprung into action following a tip-off about police officers allegedly accepting bribes to allow the smuggling of liquor from Diu. A decoy operation was set up targeting Inspector K N Goswami from the Una police station and other officers at the Ghoghla check post in Mandvi.
As part of the operation, a vehicle approached the checkpoint for inspection. Sensing the trap, the on-duty police officers fled the scene, with one officer even discarding his uniform in the process. However, the authorities managed to apprehend a middleman, Nilesh Tadvi, who has since been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act and is currently in police remand for six days.
Further investigation into the case revealed incriminating audio clips on Inspector Goswami’s phone, which exposed discussions about money collection. Both Inspector Goswami and ASI Nilesh Chaganbhai have been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The ACB is currently conducting a forensic examination of Goswami’s phone to uncover further details about other police officials potentially involved in the case.
