Gujarat Vidyapith, founded by Mahatma Gandhi, is set to establish ‘Bhartiya Gau Tirth’, a national centre for indigenous cows, to promote local breeds. The idea was proposed by the Chancellor and Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat during a meeting on December 21. The centre is expected to be operational at Vidyapith’s regional centre at Bochasan village in Anand.
Devvrat emphasized that Gujarat Vidyapith should conserve various breeds of cows in line with Gandhiji’s ideals. The national centre on cow research, preservation, and conservation of indigenous breeds is expected to be set up within a month. A detailed project report is being prepared by a team from Kamdhenu University and Gujarat Vidyapith.
The trust has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kamdhenu University in Gandhinagar for the conservation and preservation of indigenous cows. The university will undertake the technical and research part of the project. The plan is to make the centre a pilgrimage spot where people can learn about cows and how to ideally manage the breeds.
The centre will house around 250 cows from 50 indigenous breeds. Teams will soon visit other states to identify the best cows that can be a part of the centre. While Gujarat Vidyapith is expecting financial support from the state government for setting up this centre, it is also hopeful of receiving donations and funds from institutions and individuals.
Over the last six months, Gujarat Vidyapith has phased out all non-indigenous cows at its four gaushalas. At present, it has over 80 cows and progeny at its gaushalas in Randheja, Dethli, Ambheti, Bochasan, and with Krishi Vigyan Kendra.
