Savera Prakash, a Hindu woman and a medical graduate, has filed her nomination for a general seat in the upcoming Pakistan elections. She is the first woman to contest from the Buner district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) ticket.
Savera Prakash is the daughter of Omprakash, a retired doctor and a former PPP member. She is also the General Secretary of the PPP Women’s Wing and has been working for the welfare of the community, especially women and the environment.
She told Dawn that she wants to follow her father’s footsteps and serve the underprivileged in the area. She said that serving humanity is in her blood and her dream was to become an MLA. She also expressed her hope that the senior leadership of the PPP would support her candidature.
Pakistan is set to hold its general elections on February 8, 2024. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has made it mandatory to include five percent women candidates in general seats. Savera Prakash’s nomination is a historic step for the representation of women and minorities in Pakistan’s politics.
