In solemn remembrance of the sacrifice of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s sons, Shahibzadas Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji, the nation observes Veer Bal Diwas today. The historical significance of this day harks back to the tragic events orchestrated by the Mughals under Aurangzeb’s command, culminating in the demise of the valiant young souls.
Last year, on the auspicious occasion of the Prakash Purab of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially declared December 26 as “Veer Bal Diwas.” This declaration serves to honor the memory of the Sikh spiritual leader’s fourth son and his brother, who were martyred for their refusal to convert to Islam upon the Mughals’ demand.
Historical Context
The saga of Veer Bal Diwas is intertwined with the lives of the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji – Sahibzada Ajit Singh, Shahibjada Jujhar Singh, Sahibjada Zorawar Singh, and Sahibzada Fateh Singh. In 1704, during a period of food scarcity, the Mughals, led by Aurangzeb, seized Anandpur Sahib, resulting in a protracted struggle on the banks of the Sarsa River.
The family faced division, and Guru Gobind Singh, in the face of Mughal demands, reluctantly surrendered the fortress. Subsequently, a broken truce led to the Sikhs fleeing Anandpur. Tragically, Nawab Wazir Khan captured Guru Gobind Singh’s sons, Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh, taking them to Sirhind. Despite pressures to convert to Islam for their safety, the young Sahibzadas chose martyrdom and were allegedly sentenced to death by being bricked alive.
Significance of Veer Bal Diwas
Veer Bal Diwas holds profound significance as it pays homage to the “Sahibzades,” the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh. The youngest Sahibzade’s sacrifice, marked on December 26, serves as a poignant reminder of their unwavering commitment to their faith. Notably, Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh were mere six and nine years old when they made the ultimate sacrifice.
On this day, communities across the nation come together to reflect on the courage and resilience of these young martyrs, ensuring that the legacy of Veer Bal Diwas endures through commemorations and tributes.
