Professor Khandekar passed away due to a cardiac arrest on Friday, December 23, 2023, while addressing an alumni meet on campus.
Professor Khandekar, known for his passion for good health and dedication to students, tragically collapsed on stage moments after urging the audience to prioritize their well-being. This unexpected tragedy has left the IIT Kanpur community deeply saddened and shaken.
A respected scholar and dedicated administrator, Professor Khandekar earned accolades for his contributions to both teaching and research. He led the Mechanical Engineering department with vision and innovation, while his role as Dean of Student Affairs saw him advocate tirelessly for the welfare of students.
Former IIT Kanpur Director, Abhay Karandikar, shared his shock and grief, remembering Professor Khandekar as “an outstanding teacher and researcher, full of energy and enthusiasm.” He conveyed heartfelt condolences to Professor Khandekar’s family, including his son Pravah, who is currently studying at Cambridge University.
