Air India, under the revitalizing grip of the Tata Group, has taken a monumental step towards reclaiming its position as a leading airline. Marking a historic turning point, the carrier received its first Airbus A350-900 widebody aircraft on Saturday, making it the first Indian airline to do so. This milestone marks not only the first delivery from Air India’s mammoth 250-aircraft order with Airbus but also dawns a new era with the sleek A350 sporting the airline’s reimagined livery.
This order stands tall as a testament to Air India’s ambitious growth plans. It comprises a total of 40 A350s – 20 each of the A350-900 and A350-1000 variants – alongside 210 A320neo narrowbody aircraft. The airline expects to welcome five more A350-900s by March, further bolstering its fleet.
This arrival signifies a shift in Air India’s operational landscape. It marks the introduction of the first Airbus widebody plane into the existing fleet, traditionally dominated by American giant Boeing. While Boeing has held sway in the widebody segment, Airbus has enjoyed a stronger presence in narrowbody jets. This acquisition sets the stage for a more diversified fleet, equipped to tackle both domestic and international routes with efficiency and versatility.
Widebody aircraft are the workhorses of long-haul and ultra-long-haul flights, while their narrowbody counterparts cater primarily to domestic and shorter international hops. In its standard three-class configuration, the A350-900 boasts a passenger capacity of 300-350 and a staggering flight range exceeding 15,000 km. The larger A350-1000 further extends this range, comfortably tackling non-stop journeys of over 16,000 km with its 350-410 passenger capacity.
This acquisition transcends mere numbers. It marks a crucial step towards revitalizing Air India’s aging fleet, many of which bore the brunt of financial woes prior to the Tata Group’s acquisition in January 2022. The 470-aircraft order, split between Airbus and Boeing, forms the backbone of Air India’s ambitious “Vihaan.AI” roadmap, aiming for substantial network and fleet expansion, profitability, and market leadership.
Beyond capacity, the A350-900 brings a world-class travel experience to Air India’s passengers. Featuring a three-class cabin configuration designed by Collins Aerospace, it offers 28 luxurious Business Class suites with full-flat beds, 24 Premium Economy seats with enhanced legroom, and 264 spacious Economy Class seats. Every seat boasts the latest generation Panasonic eX3 in-flight entertainment system and HD screens, promising a superior flying experience.
Since its return to the Tata Group, Air India has exhibited unwavering commitment to revamping its offerings and expanding its reach. The “Vihaan.AI” roadmap outlines comprehensive plans for network and fleet growth, aiming to propel the airline onto a path of sustained success. Additionally, existing aircraft are undergoing refurbishments, and grounded planes are being readied for redeployment.
Campbell Wilson, CEO & Managing Director of Air India, aptly characterized the A350’s arrival as a “symbol of the new age of flying.” He emphasized its promise of a world-class, long-haul travel experience and its role in achieving Air India’s sustainability goals through its excellent flight economics and state-of-the-art technology.
Air India’s first A350, adorned with both the promise of comfort and efficiency, marks a pivotal moment in the airline’s journey. It signifies a renewed commitment to excellence, passenger comfort, and a robust future grounded in strategic expansion and cutting-edge technology. As Air India prepares to take flight with its A350 fleet, passengers and aviation enthusiasts alike can eagerly anticipate a renewed era of Indian aviation.
