In a historic turn of events, Robin Minz, a 21-year-old left-handed wicketkeeping batter, etched his name in the annals of IPL history by becoming the first-ever tribal cricketer to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament. The IPL auction witnessed an intense bidding war between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans for this emerging talent.
Starting with a modest base price of INR 20 lakh, Minz’s exceptional skills and potential fueled the bidding competition, ultimately resulting in an astounding payday of INR 3.6 crore 18 times his initial valuation.
Despite not having made his professional cricket debut, Minz’s left-handed batting prowess and impressive performances in invitational T20 tournaments, notably an unbeaten 73 off 35 deliveries in Odisha, caught the attention of IPL franchises. Having represented Jharkhand U19 and U25 teams, he was even selected for a training camp by the five-time IPL champions, Mumbai Indians, showcasing the high regard in which he is held.
Minz, who considers MS Dhoni as his idol, made the bold decision to pursue a cricket career, forsaking further studies after completing his 10th standard exams. Hailing from a family with a military background, his father currently serves in airport security in Jharkhand.
While Minz underwent trials with several IPL teams, including Lucknow Supergiants, Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders, he remained unsold during the 2023 IPL auction. However, his fortunes changed with the recent auction, where the Gujarat Titans secured his services. With only three wicketkeepers on their roster and just two Indian options, Minz stands a promising chance of making his IPL debut with the Titans. Born in 2002, he adds versatility to his skill set with the ability to bowl left-arm orthodox spin.
