New Delhi: In a move raising eyebrows and concerns, On Thursday, Parliament passed a new Telecommunications Bill granting the government expanded control over the telecom sector. The bill, hailed by the government as a modernization effort, allows for temporarily seizing telecom networks during national security emergencies and opens alternative means for allocating satellite spectrum.
One of the most contested aspects is the ability of the government to take “temporary possession” of any telecom network in the interest of national security, public safety, or “public emergency.” Opponents fear this broad brush could lead to unnecessary state intervention and stifle private sector growth.
Another contentious point is the provision for non-auctioned allocation of satellite spectrum. While intended to streamline satellite communication infrastructure, critics argue it might create cronyism and favoritism in spectrum distribution.
However, supporters of the bill, including the government, highlight its focus on technological advancement and infrastructure development. They claim the reforms will speed up the rollout of 5G and broadband internet across the country, bridging the digital divide and boosting the economy.
