Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has defied gravity, rocketing past pre-pandemic levels with a 109% surge in passenger traffic during November 2023. The airport, a vital travel artery for India, witnessed a staggering 4.46 million passengers taking flight, surpassing even its own record set in November 2022 by a remarkable 13%.
This meteoric rise isn’t just about numbers; it’s a testament to the airport’s resilience and its pivotal role as India’s air travel hub. On a single day (November 25th), CSMIA saw a record-breaking 167,132 passengers navigate its bustling halls, with over 120,000 domestic and 46,000 international journeys taking off. This wasn’t an isolated peak; November 11th witnessed the highest-ever single-day Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) with an impressive 1,032 planes taking to the skies.
Domestic travel soared, with a staggering 3 million passengers choosing CSMIA as their launchpad. The international front wasn’t left behind, with a total of 28,679 ATMs recorded, a 12% increase over 2022. Popular destinations like Dubai, London, and Abu Dhabi continued to be international favorites, while Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai remained top contenders domestically. The bustling Mumbai-Delhi route alone saw a phenomenal 557,393 passengers embark on their journeys.
IndiGo, Vistara, and Air India led the domestic pack, with IndiGo carrying over 1.6 million passengers. On the international front, IndiGo, Air India, and Emirates maintained their dominance. CSMIA’s recent expansion of international connectivity and frequency, with new services to Entebbe, Baku, Bangkok, and Toronto, further fueled this impressive growth.
CSMIA’s November performance is a resounding affirmation of India’s travel resurgence. The airport, like a phoenix rising from the pandemic ashes, has not only regained its pre-pandemic strength but soared beyond it, painting a vibrant picture of India’s aviation landscape.
