An American of Indian origin was convicted of defrauding public health insurance plans of more than $4 million and transacting in the criminal proceeds.
Kaival Patel, 54, of West New York, New Jersey, was convicted on December 7, of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and health care fraud, four counts of health care fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering by transacting in criminal proceeds, and five counts of money laundering by transacting in criminal proceeds following an 11-day trial before US District Judge Robert B Kugler.
Patel formed and operated a company ABC Healthy Living LLC to market compound prescription medications.
The statement said that Patel and his associates contacted an American doctor of Indian descent who ran a clinic in Newark and persuaded him to prescribe drugs for patients that the patients did not need. In return, Patel and his associates used to get commission.
Some provincial and local government workers who had life insurance were charged thousands of dollars for a month’s worth of vitamins, scar creams, pain creams, libido-enhancing creams, antacids or medications.
Patel conspired with the pharmaceutical manufacturers to add unnecessary ingredients to the medicines to further increase the cost and also to increase his illegal income.
He made several financial transactions to generate income through health care fraud and online fraud, the statement said.
Attorney Philip R Schellinger said that Patel was ordered by US District Judge Robert B Kugler was convicted in an 11-day trial.
