The Government of Gujarat has announced to have identified Dahod, Ambaji, Dholavira, Palitana, Ankleshwar, Morbi, Rajpipla, Botad, Dwarka and Dhordo as the sites of greenfield airports. The Gujarat state government signed a memorandum of understanding with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to develop 11 new greenfield airports and expand nine existing ones. With an eye on the tourism, the governement is keen on establishing robust civil aviation network in the state. Exploring the possibilities of three additional greenfield airports at Vadnagar, Siddhpur and Kevadia could also be on cards in future.
The Airport Authority of India and the state government will soon conduct a technical feasibility study and examine examine the availability of land needed for these projects. The state government has expressed it’s willingness to acquire land and provide it free of cost to the AAI. The agreement with AAI envisages Gujarat government to provide other utility services like electricity and water needed for the airports as well. Estimated cost of each airport project is likely to be in the range of ₹1,500-3,000 crore.
Apparently attaching significant importance on the development of civil aviation infrastructure in Gujarat, the state government is also looking looking to expand existing airports at Surat, Vadodara, Kandla, Porbandar, Bhavnagar and Keshod and airstrips at Mehsana, Amreli and Mandvi airports.
At present, Gujarat has about 11 functional airports at Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Kandla, Bhuj, Porbandar, Keshod and Mundra.
