Chennai, Tamil Nadu – AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the DMK government, accusing it of administrative incompetence over the waterlogging crisis in Chennai. He also questioned the government’s decision to spend crores of rupees on Formula E race in the city.
Speaking to reporters in Salem after a party meeting, Palaniswami said the DMK government’s failure to address the drainage issue in Chennai despite allocating Rs 4,000 crore for the purpose exposed its administrative inefficiency.
“The state government had announced Rs 4,000 crore for drainage works in Chennai and assured people that there will not be any water stagnation. However, Chennai has been severely affected by the recent rains as the stormwater drains are not constructed properly. This shows the administrative incompetence of the government,” he said.
Palaniswami also slammed the government’s decision to organize the Formula E race in Chennai, saying it was a waste of public money. He questioned the need to spend Rs 242 crore for the event, including Rs 42 crore for creating tracks, when there is already an existing race track in Irungattukottai.
“Many government projects like Amma canteens are floundering without funds and the government is wasting people’s money in such events. This is highly condemnable,” he said.
He also criticized the government for choosing Island Grounds, which is located near hospitals, railway stations, and ports, as the venue for the race, saying it would cause inconvenience to the public.
On the DVAC raid at the ED office, Palaniswami said, “A mistake is a mistake irrespective of who commits it, and the law will be doing its duty.”
Regarding the upcoming parliamentary elections, he said 90% of the preliminary work, including the formation of booth committees in each district, has been completed. The remaining work will be finished in a week, after which the party will discuss election strategies with its chief functionaries and announce alliances closer to the elections.
Responding to a question about alleged threats to Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M Appavu, Palaniswami said, “As far as AIADMK is concerned, we respect him. But we don’t value his speech as he always supports DMK in Assembly.”
