The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has set a deadline of March 31, 2024, for vehicle tax defaulters to pay their dues. After this date, a penalty of 18% with simple interest will be imposed.
The AMC has the power to impose penalties on defaulters under the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporation Act. The tax applies not only to vehicles registered within the city limits but also to those registered outside but used within the city.
The civic body has stated that those who fail to pay their pending vehicle tax by March 31, 2024, will be slapped with an 18% penalty on simple interest.
Revenue Committee chairman Jainik Vakil said, “The last date to pay vehicle tax dues will be March 31, 2024, after which a penalty under the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations Act will be imposed.”
He said that the under the law, AMC has powers to impose penalty and the same has been imposed on property tax and professional tax defaulters.
These powers will now be extended to cover vehicle tax defaulters also, he added.
He said that even those vehicles which are registered outside the city limits but used within the city are liable to pay vehicle tax ranging from 2% to 5%. The tax is imposed on the vehicle’s base price. The committee chairman said vehicle tax collection has seen an upward trend.
From April 1 to November 7, the corporation has collected Rs 132.69 crore, which was Rs 186.26 crore for the 2022-23 financial year. He said that average collection this year was Rs 18.5 crore per month. This figure was Rs 15.5 crore in the previous financial year.
