Ahmedabad Police Constabulary To See Mega Reshuffle

| Updated: November 7, 2023 11:13

After a major reshuffle of police inspectors a couple of months back, this time it is the turn of Ahmedabad Police constabulary to see maga transfers.

Approximately 6,500 constables out of the total 8,500 will be relocated in a staggered way as part of an effort to combat corruption within the force, and break the influence of those who have become too comfortable in their current jurisdictions.

The reshuffle is planned by Commissioner of Police Gyanendra Singh Malik. In August, Malik had shifted 51 police inspectors based on their Personal Appraisal Reports (PAR), or Annual Confidential Reports (ACR).

The transfers will be made according to the constables’ conduct and the duration of their posting. The move is primarily aimed at reducing corruption by dislodging constables who have been involved in unsavoury and unprofessional conduct in the name of police.

Malik said, the transfers were being made for the betterment of the police department and to improve the image of the city police amongst common people.
Several constables, known as ‘Vahivatdars’ for their superiors, have been accused of extortion.

An incident involving the extortion of Rs 60,000 from a Bopal-based couple by two cops and one TRB jawan apparently spurred the higher-ups to take notice and initiate the mass transfers.

Following the extortion incident, all DCP rank officers serving in the city were directed to lay decoys to catch police personnel engaging in vigilantism and extortion.

Sources said some constables with a history of misconduct and dubious records had been transferred to the K Company of the Headquarters.

However, it has been observed they continue to maintain their influence as ‘Vahivatdars’ for their superiors and are still seen in roaming in areas of their previous posting.

To address this issue, senior police officials are closely monitoring the activities of these personnel and chalking out strict action plan against those involved in extortion. This may include removing them from the city police’s jurisdiction.
