Why people might appear glum this festive season

| Updated: November 4, 2023 19:19

The festive season is usually the time for indulgences. Buy a smartphone, branded jeans, an LED TV and what not.

But this festive season is going to be different for many families.

Households throughout the city are finding the holiday season less cheerful due to a sharp increase in the cost of necessities. Previously set aside for festivities, the Diwali bonus is now being used to pay for the scalding of common fruits, vegetables, and other necessities.

The cost of fruits, ivy gourds, and cluster beans has significantly increased, making things more expensive for the average person. People are lamenting the way the price of vegetables is surging like that of gold.

An essential ingredient in Indian cooking, onions have stayed priced at Rs 100 per kg. Ivy gourd and cluster beans have surpassed this, hitting a record high of Rs 120 per kg. Culinary traditions are being hampered by the price of ginger, which has skyrocketed to Rs 300 per kg, while cauliflower is still only available for Rs 100 per kg.

The issue is worsened by fruit prices, which are currently around Rs 200 per kg for apples and oranges.

The cost of a basic fruit like bananas has increased to Rs 100 per dozen, further straining household budgets.
