Indian-Origin Soldier Among 17 Israeli Troops Killed in Gaza Battle

| Updated: November 2, 2023 19:44

A 20-year-old Indian-origin soldier was one of 17 Israeli soldiers killed in combat in Gaza, as confirmed by the mayor of the town in southern Israel where the soldier resided.

Mayor Benny Bitton used Facebook to express his condolences on the death of Staff-Sgt. Halel Solomon, who had Indian origins. In his post, Mayor Bitton stated, “It is with great sorrow and grief that we announce the death of a son of Dimona, Halel Solomon, in the battle in Gaza.”

He further described Halel’s aspirations and the impact he had on his community. The soldier’s family, including his parents, Ronit and Mordechai and his sisters Yasmin, Hila, Vared, and Shaked, also shared in this collective grief. Halel’s educational background and his commitment to serving in the Givati Brigade were detailed in the mayor’s Facebook post.

The announcement of the soldiers’ names came on Wednesday after families were informed. On Thursday morning, the tragic news of a 17th serviceman’s death was reported.

These soldiers lost their lives during the ground invasion in Gaza, which began on Tuesday, as Israeli forces advanced deeper into the territory, targeting numerous sites associated with the Hamas terror group, according to The New York Times and the Israeli military.
