A recent case in Junagadh has sparked discussions and subsequent investigations, as a businessman, identified as Vasant Mordia of Manavadar, admitted his daughter to a medical college under the economically backward quota.
This incident bears an uncanny resemblance to the plot of the popular movie “Hindi Medium,” where a father uses a fake certificate to secure his daughter’s admission to a prestigious school.
Despite being an established industrialist in Manavadar, Mordia’s decision to utilise the Economically Backward Reservation Certificate for his daughter’s medical college admission has raised eyebrows. His daughter has successfully gained admission to a medical college in Gandhinagar, but questions surround the legitimacy of the certificate used to secure her spot.
The matter has now reached the Provincial Office of the Junagadh Collector, who has entrusted the investigation to a Provincial Officer. The focus is on whether the rules for issuing an Economically Backward Class certificate were violated, if any properties were concealed, or if false affidavits were submitted. If any irregularities are found in this case, it could lead to the cancellation of the daughter’s admission.
Mordia defended his actions, stating, “I currently own 11 bighas of land, and our annual income is less than Rs 8 lakh. Most of our property is co-owned, and we have yet to divide it among brothers. My financial situation is quite dire, which is why I obtained an Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota certificate indicating my income that makes my daughter eligible for the admission.”
