Five states, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Chhattisgarh, will vote between November 7 and 30, with the counting to be held on December 3, the Election Commission of India announced.
Chhattisgarh will vote in two phases, November 7 and November 17, Madhya Pradesh on November 17, Mizoram on November 7, Rajasthan on November 23 and Telangana on November 30. Mizoram assembly’s term ends on December 17. The Mizo National Front has been in power in the north-eastern state. The terms of the legislative assemblies of Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan will end in January next year, but the dates are yet to be declared.
As many as 1.77 lakh polling stations will be set up in 679 assembly constituencies, Money Control reported.
The portal added that polling stations will be set up in reserve forest areas and sanctuaries for tribals in Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, polling teams in Mizoram will travel on foot through 22 non-motorable polling stations and 19 riverine polling stations by boat.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has given a count of the voters which comprise 8.52 lakh in Mizoram, 2.03 crore in Chhattisgarh, 5.6 crore in Madhya Pradesh, 5.25 crore in Rajasthan and 3.17 crore in Telangana,
Kumar told a certain section of the media that any cross-border movement of illicit cash, liquor, freebies and drugs will be monitored.
As per the report, Kumar said that 940 check posts had been established for coordinated inter-agency action to prevent the flow of money and drugs. Non-scheduled charter flights will be monitored, he said, adding that cargo movement through railways would undergo thorough checking.
“Around 60 lakh first-time voters will participate in elections. As many as 15.39 lakh young voters are eligible to participate in elections due to amendments to the qualifying dates. To inspire young voters, over 2,900 polling stations will be managed by youth,” Kumar told the media.
“Special polling booths are being set up for vulnerable tribal groups in all states. We are ensuring people and officials don’t have to face challenges on the ground.”
