That owners and paying guests can live in harmony is becoming a myth of sorts. In recent times, Indian societies have witnessed several instances of altercation between the two, which usually spiral out of control.
The latest in a series of ‘us versus them’ scuffles happened on October 1 when some young women staying as paying guests in Shivranjani Society were allegedly assaulted by members of a society over a parking dispute.
Although the complaints were lodged, the Satellite police delayed the FIR till Monday evening.
According to a report, the society claimed it served notices to PG tenants, which the latter denied.
The residents, the report added, want to put a full stop to the PG renting system in the society as they believed the rentees had become a menace with their code of conduct.
The society secretary Mitesh Thaker told the paper, “Despite several notices to PGs urging the evacuation of tenants, the apathy from homeowners is clear. They neither comply nor instruct their property managers to adhere to the society’s directives. The lack of support leaves us facing the nuisance without recourse.”
A victim said, “The ladies of the society barged into our PG without any prior notice. They started shouting and telling us to leave the PG, and that they had issued a notice. But we did not receive any kind of notice or communication of this sort from the PG owner.”
A young woman PG tenant told the paper, “Regular remarks on our clothing choices are quite common here. Every person has the right to wear whatever they want. The clothes we wear do not create any kind of nuisance.”
A middle-aged owner-resident said that senior citizens stopped visiting the temple in the society since the tenants would go there in inappropriate outfits.
However, Inspector KY Vyas of Satellite Police told the media outlet that tenants shouldn’t be judged on what they wore in public. He said, “The issue of clothes is not relevant here at all. An individual cannot be judged on their clothes. If we find the allegations to be true either way, we will go ahead. We have called both parties to the police station again on Tuesday.”
