The Sardar Vallabhbhai PateI International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad is bracing for an anticipated 30% increase in non-scheduled charter aircraft movements during October in the backdrop of the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup matches in the city.
October is set to host two major ICC Cricket World Cup matches in Gujarat – the opening clash between England and New Zealand on October 5, and the much-anticipated showdown between India and Pakistan on October 14. With political figures, business magnates, celebrities, and sports enthusiasts expected to descend on Ahmedabad for these matches, the overall charter aircraft traffic is poised for substantial growth.
“We have already begun receiving inquiries from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding charter availability for the opening match day as well as for the India-Pakistan match. These inquiries cover match days, as well as a day before and even a day after. Business groups have also been inquiring about aircraft availability on these dates,” revealed an official associated with an aviation firm, who requested anonymity.
Ahmedabad’s airport is well-prepared for the anticipated increase in aircraft movements, boasting around 43 aircraft parking stands. Sources indicate that charter aircraft movements had reached 500 by September 27, averaging approximately 17 flights per day. Notably, the airport handled as many as 35 aircraft in a single day in September.
“Queries for aircraft slots and availability are pouring in from various quarters, and the general aviation terminal’s capacity is being optimally utilised,” said an airport source.
During the 2022 assembly elections in Gujarat, the city airport handled the movement of up to 79 charter aircraft in a single day.
On an average day, the Ahmedabad airport accommodates about 250 scheduled flights, both domestic and international.
This routine demand from political leaders, VVIPs, corporates, and state guests is expected to continue at a heightened pace in the coming months, boosted further by the festive season and the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit.
