Tata Projects has collaborated with Micron Technology to establish a cutting-edge semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Sanand, Gujarat. In a press release issued on Saturday (23 September), Tata Projects emphasised the contract’s significance, affirming the company’s prowess in large-scale sustainable infrastructure development within India’s manufacturing sector.
This significant venture, situated in the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation area of Chaarodi, Sanand, spans an extensive 93 acres of land. The endeavor marks a crucial milestone and represents the most substantial investment under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). Phase 1 construction will feature a 500,000 square feet cleanroom space, anticipated to be operational by late 2024.
The project encompasses the design and construction of India’s first DRAM (dynamic random access memory) and NAND (non-volatile flash memory) assembly and test facility. It adheres to LEED Gold Standards of the Green Building Council and incorporates advanced water-saving technologies.
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the nation’s inaugural semiconductor plant in Gujarat. This event signifies a pivotal step toward realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India.
Vaishnaw expressed confidence in the prompt completion of the semiconductor plant’s construction, anticipating the rollout of the first indigenous microchips by December 2024. He highlighted the remarkable progress achieved in India’s electronics industry during PM Modi’s leadership, with manufacturing costs for mobile phones surging from ₹17,000 crores in 2014 to ₹3,65,000 crores. The electronics industry, once valued at ₹1,90,000 crores, has expanded to an impressive ₹8,30,000 crores, while exports have quintupled from ₹40,000 crores to ₹2,00,000 crores. Vaishnaw underscored that semiconductor chips have been instrumental in driving these advancements, positioning the country to emerge as a prominent semiconductor hub.
