Fatehpur Sikri near Agra saw a tragic incident when a French tourist fell down from a height at the historic site and died.
The tourist reportedly fell from a nine-foot-tall platform at the fort when the surrounding wooden railing broke. An official of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said the woman who died was among a group of French tourists who were taking pictures at the Turkish Sultana Palace inside the fort when the wooden railing broke due to their combined weight.
After she suffered head injuries from falling from the platform onto the stone floor, she was taken to the SN Medical College and then to a private hospital in Agra, where doctors declared she was brought dead.
The ASI official, Raj Kumar Patel, said the woman became unconscious after she fell and they suspected a head injury as there was no bleeding. The staff called for an ambulance but it took some time to arrive. By then, some guides present at the monument arranged for an ambulance there and took the injured tourist to a hospital.
A local tour guide said the railing that broke was installed after the Covid-19 pandemic and had been loose for several months before the incident. He also claimed that there were no ambulances in Fatehpur Sikri and the one used to take the injured tourist had to be summoned from Kiraoli, which is located around 20 kilometres away.
