MPs in the House of Commons flayed UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for failing to have a strong presence during the G20 meet.
Reports claim that Sunak was asked whether he raised the issue of Scottish Sikh Jagtar Singh Johal’s release and the fact that India had been buying oil from Russia.
Media outlets said that Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the opposition, described the joint declaration disappointing with a “weaker language than last year’s summit”.
It has emerged that Liberal Democrat MP Richard Foord asked if Sunak was in agreement with Canada PM Justin Trudeau’s view that if it were up to him
the language would have been stronger. “Because this is not the G7 or, indeed, the G1, it is not for us just to take the language that we ourselves would like,” Sunak was quoted as saying.
“Our position on Ukraine is crystal clear for all to see, but the G20 is a collection of a large group of countries that do not all share the same perspective on global affairs or indeed, the same values. To assume that it can reflect the unanimity that we have in the G7 is to misunderstand how foreign affairs works.”
Conservative MP Rehman Chishti reminded that India was one of the 44 non-aligned states not supporting sanctions against Russia. “India takes Russian oil, and some now say that it refines that oil and sells the products into Europe, circumventing those sanctions. Did the Prime Minister have those conversations with PM Modi,” he questioned.
Labour MP Barry Sheerman said, “Did he ask what Modi is doing to stop all the persecution of Muslims and Christians, with their mosques and churches being burned.”
