The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Ahmedabad has reportedly misplaced critical data for cars and motorcycles aged 15 years or older. Now, as a result of this lapse, owners of old vehicles in the city are confronting a series of unexpected challenges over re-registration.
It is said that the RTO, instead of taking responsibility for the loss and streamlining things, has now shifted the burden on the owners, asking them to furnish more documents and affidavits to testify their ownership.
People aiming to renew registrations for their aged vehicles find themselves frequently visiting the RTO. Private vehicles, including motorcycles and cars, need re-registration at the RTO after 15 years of initial registration.
Amdavadis are expressing their frustration. A victim of this mess-up said, “I am the second owner of my 15-year-old car. While I have its registration certificate (RC), the RTO seems to have lost data for my vehicle. Now, they want the old car bill and a lifetime tax receipt for re-registration. If I can’t produce these, I must get an affidavit. This is a tedious and complex process.”
Another vehicle owner said, “The RTO should have records for older vehicles. Many are now second or third owners, and may not have old invoices or tax documents. The RTO’s data gap for these vehicles creates undue stress.”
An RTO insider said, “We’ve been digitising records, but data for some older vehicles was lost during our move to Vastral. Some data was also deliberately discarded by the RTO, complicating re-registration of 15-year-old vehicles.”
RTO AM Parmar said, “Re-registration usually requires Form No. 24, e-form, or Form No. 21 and 22, along with past bills and insurance papers. When our data falls short, we ask for more documents as per government rules. Yes, some data was lost during our move to Vastral RTO. Still, we aim to lessen the public’s inconvenience.”
