Pratibha Jain has become the new mayor of Ahmedabad city. Jatin patel has been elected as her deputy. Senior councillor from Shahibaug ward of the city, Jain currently heads the state’s ministry of women and child development. Devang Dani has been appointed as Chairman of the Standing Committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Gaurang Prajapati has been made leader of the ruling party.
The names were decided by ruling BJP’s state parliamentary board in a series of meetings in Gandhinagar last week. The new office bearers shall be on these posts for two and half years after the previous term of elected office bearers ended. The post of the mayor was reserved for this term for a woman councilor.
All of them are three-term senior councillors and their experience and seniority were taken into consideration while selecting them for the posts. Gaurangbhai Prajapati is an engineer by education. Pratibha Jain completed her education with a BA in political science.
She is the fifth woman mayor of Ahmedabad, following Bijal Patel (2018-2020), Meenakshi Patel (2013-2015), Aneesa Begum Mirza (2003-2005), Malini Bharatgiri (1999-2002) and Bhavna Dave (1995-1996).
Meanwhile, Pinky Soni has been selected as the new Mayor of Vadodara city. Chirag Barot has been elected as her deputy. Shital Mistry has been appointed as Chairman of the Standing Committee of Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC). Manoj Patel will be the leader of the ruling party in Vadodara.
With this, Pinky Soni has become the fourth woman mayor of the city. The names of new office bearers were announced by the city BJP in-charge Gordhan Zadafia.
With Ahmedabad and Vadodara getting new office heads in their respective municipal corporations, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, and Jamnagar corporations are likely to appoint the new names soon.
